How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business

Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, logged out with web search on, three times each, and count how often your business is named. Then do the same in Google AI Mode.

Step by step

  1. Write 10 questions a buyer would ask: your category and city, a specific need, and a comparison.
  2. Open ChatGPT logged out, or in a private window, so your own history doesn't shape the answer. Turn on web search.
  3. Ask each question three times. Answers change from run to run, so one answer proves little.
  4. For every answer, write down whether you were named, who was named instead and which sites were cited.
  5. Repeat in Google AI Mode: search on google.com and open the AI Mode tab.
  6. Your score is the answers that named you divided by all answers.

What the cited sites tell you

The sites an answer cites are where AI got its picks. If competitors are listed on them and you are not, that is your to-do list.

Check that ChatGPT can read your site

Sites that block OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, don't appear in ChatGPT search answers. Look for it in your robots.txt and your firewall's bot rules. Changes take about a day to apply.

The free check

ClearMetric's free check asks 5 buyer questions in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode live, then shows how often you were recommended and who was named instead. It takes 2 to 3 minutes.
